State Awards $35 Million to the City of Chillicothe

Announcement

Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine and Director of Development, Lydia Mihalik, visited Chillicothe yesterday to announce a portion of the Appalachian Community Grant Program which is investing a total of $500 million into Ohio’s 32 county Appalachian region.
The City of Chillicothe partnered with Ross County to write and submit a joint application which included not only Ross County, but 11 additional counties and 30 communities. The application highlighted Southern Ohio’s history, heritage, and culture. Yesterday, the project was awarded $154 million across the 12 counties, including $45 million for Ross County.

“This grant is truly a once in a generation opportunity for our community and completes the vision for the park that was
set forth in the Yoctangee Park master plan and the recently completed Choose Chillicothe Comprehensive plan. The construction of an amphitheater and the renovation and reinvention of the Armory will make it a destination that matches the scale and importance of our UNESCO World Heritage designation. Residents and park patrons will also enjoy a more diverse range of recreational opportunities and a safer park.” said Mayor Luke Feeney. “The award will stimulate economic development, increase tourism, create jobs and strengthen community pride for years to come.”

The City of Chillicothe will receive $35 million towards renovations and new construction projects throughout and surrounding
Yoctangee Park. Projects include the construction of a destination amphitheater and complete restoration and expansion of the Chillicothe Armory creating a facility that can serve as a welcome center for those visiting from around the world. The grant also includes funding to permanently locate the Chillicothe Farmer’s Market to the park and upgrade the gateways and streets surrounding the park and downtown. Among the other recipients named yesterday, the Mighty Children’s Museum will receive funds to renovate and expand the museum to add STEM related programming.
