About the Old Canal Smoke House

If you’re in the mood for hickory smoked barbeque then this is the place for you! The Old Canal Smoke House is located in historic downtown Chillicothe, Ohio and has everything from great ribs, chicken, prime rib and salmon to sandwiches, burgers, appetizers and desserts. We also serve all legal beverages and have both a banquet room and patio dining available.

Founded in 1796 by Colonel Nathaniel Massie where the Paint Creek and Scioto River come together, Massie laid out plans for the village of what is now the City of Chillicothe.

The Old Canal Smoke House sits on the bank of the Ohio and Erie Canal that ran throughout Ohio from Cleveland to Portsmouth. The arrival of the canal gave a boost to agriculture in Ross County by provising farmers an inexpensive way to ship their grain to markets. The canal also attracted settlers to our area and was a major influence on the growth of Chillicothe and Ross County. The word Chillicothe comes from the Shawnee Indian word meaning “principal town”.

The Old Canal Smoke House was founded in 2004 by Dane and Jodie Straub offering the areas finest food and their specialties: smoked prime rib, pork, brisket, fish and chicken.

The Dock at Water opened for business on St. Patrick’s Day 1998. A group had a dream to open a place in Chillicothe where you could come and enjoy an evening with your family and friends. They wanted to create an atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy.

As many local residents know, in the mid 1800;s the area along Water Street was the location of Erie Canal, thus the name Water Street. Along the old canal in this area were many docks for loading and unloading cargo form the canal boats, thus comes out name the Dock at Water.

In the canal days, our locations was occupied by a lumber yard, and in the 1940′s became the international Harvester Farm Equipment sales building. Our building subsequently has been a home for a used military vehicle business and several gathering places and has now evolved into the gathering place you know and enjoy today.

The Experience

Adena was the 2000-acre estate of Thomas Worthington (1773-1827), sixth governor of Ohio and one of the state’s first United States Senators. The mansion house, completed in 1806-1807, has been restored to look much as it did when the Worthington family lived there, including many original Worthington family furnishings.

History

The house is one of only three houses designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe still standing in the country.
Latrobe is considered the first professional American architect and served as architect of the U.S.capitol under President Thomas Jefferson.

Situated on the 300 remaining acres of the original
homeplace are five outbuildings and formal gardens. The gardens have undergone major renovation. Visitors may stroll through three terraces of flowers and vegetables, as well as the shrubs and trees in the grove. Looking east from the north lawn of the mansion, one can see across the Scioto River Valley to the Logan Range. This view was the inspiration for the Great Seal of the State of Ohio.

A new Museum and Education Center features interactive exhibits that use the stories of people connected to Adena to give visitors a picture of life in Ohio in the early 1800s as well as classrooms, meeting and rental space.

Hopewell Culture National Historical Park has many opportunities to learn about the people, plants, and animals that lived in Ohio in the past and in the present. Visitors can watch a 17-minute award winning film, browse the museum, take guided tours of the Mound City Group, or attend a special program.

The History

Mounds of various shapes and enclosures often built in geometric patterns dot the landscape of the Ohio River Valley. These earthen structures were doubtless the work of many human hands. Evidence suggests that Hopewell earthworks were used for a variety of ceremonial and social activities between 200 BC to AD 500. Come learn about these sacred spaces and reflect upon the lives of their builders.
